Excelling in academics should be the goal of every child as they return to school this fall. However, many children are unable to reach their maximum potential due to a lack of necessary resources. Fortunately, a Greensboro-based nonprofit is making it easier for all children to succeed inside the classroom.

I Am A Queen will host its 6th Annual Back to School Drive on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Windsor Recreation Center, located at 1601 E. Lee St, Greensboro. This event is open to community. Since its inception, the school drive has become a local institution providing several area children an opportunity to receive precious school supplies that they may have otherwise missed out on.
Alana Allen, founder of I Am A Queen, started the school supply drive out of a desire to help children in need. Starting with 25 backpacks in 2009, the amount of supplies has doubled every year since. The goal for this year is to help 800 children in the triad.

An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without community support. This year’s media partners for the event include Huami Magazine, 97.1 WQMG and Born to DJ. Also, I Am A Queen has partnered with local organizations that include James B. Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club, Beyond the Block, Footsteps to Follow, Destined 4 Greatness Event Planning, Ange’le’ N. Simpson Foundation of Love and the Live Life Foundation. In addition to their support, each organization plays a critical role in challenging others to give.

Of all the memories created from the last five years, none are more gratifying than the personal testimonials of those in attendance. “Hearing their stories is confirmation that we’re doing the right thing,” says Alana. Aside from backpacks, other items needed are pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, folders, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks and scissors. Donations can be made online or by dropping supplies off at one of the designated drop-off locations throughout the city.
