A native of Yanceyville, N.C. Barbaralene Sellars has been a professional stylist for nine years. After graduating from Bartlett Yancey High School she engaged in a career as a print operator that spanned for 22 years. Although grateful for the employment opportunities she had, Sellars knew there was something else that she wanted to do with her life. It was styling hair.

She later enrolled and graduated from Alamance Community College and with her professional license as a cosmetologist in 2007. She then began working at Heavenly Creations Hair Salon in Burlington, a place that she has called home ever since.

What she loves most about her career is making her clients feel confident and good about themselves. She decided to pursue a career in hairstyling because she has a passion to style hair all of her life. Long before enrolling in school she had been styling hair at home.

As the time has passed, Sellars also developed a mind for business and is now the co-owner of Heavenly Creations. As a salon owner she admits there are some challenges. This includes the constant changing of the hair industry, the revolving door of the salon for hair stylist, and keeping up with the latest styling trends. Even still she has found success by being consistent and available for her clientele. “I do get tired from working 12-14 hours per day, but this is what I signed up to do and I absolutely love it,” she says.

Sellars is always offering advice for new stylist who are fresh out of school and entering the styling profession. The most important thing is to remain focused and hungry, and always eager to learn more. She says that continuing education classes are just as important as choosing the proper product lines to use. To be a successful stylist, Sellars says you must also be a good business person. ‘If you don’t manage your time and money efficiently, you will not last long,” says Sellars.
