Johnny Alston owns and operated Alston Yard Services. His company has served Greensboro and its surrounding communities since 1983. He has experienced the joys of success as a business owner, and has also provided employment opportunities to family and friends while doing so. However, just as he also gained, this year Johnny has also lost a great deal.

On May 5th, his brother Jeffrey S. Alston, lost his life. He was murdered and Johnny says the loss has impacted his life and his families as well.

Johnny says that he has had trouble with understanding the loss of his brother. “He was always the same and he never changed. Jeffrey was the kind of young man that always had a smile on his face. We never saw him angry or upset and he loved his family very much.,” says Johnny.

Johnny says he has found comforted in letting his community know what kind of person his brother was. This is an attempt to keep his brothers spirit and memory alive. “He had a heart of gold and would give his last to you if you needed it. If he had it, he would give it to you. Jeffrey didn’t meet know strangers he and just loved people,” he says.

It is a personal plight of Johnny and on his brothers behalf to spread a word of non-violence. He wants others to know that taking someone else’s life is not the answer to any problem. “If you have never experienced a tragedy of losing a loved one, I can attest that it’s a hard thing to cope with,” says Johnny. The ordeal has pushed him closer to God, as well as the rest of his family.

His brother was also an employee of Alstons Yard Service, and Johnny says his absence is very noticeable. “He was dependable and consistent,” he says. As a reminder, Johnny keeps his brothers work shirt with him as he works.
Johnny says that with his efforts to spread a message of non-violence, he hopes that it will deter others from resorting to violence. “It is tough but I know that with God’s help, I will be able to make it,” says Johnny.
